This is a technical vulnerability profile study for beaches in the Côte d'Albâtre coastal community, covering three communes: Saint-Valery-en-Caux, Veules-les-Roses, and Veulettes-sur-Mer. The study was conducted in February 2001 following European bathing water directive requirements. It examines bathing water quality, shellfish quality, and identifies potential pollution sources affecting the beaches in the region.

Water

Coastal waters affected by three rivers: the Durdent, the Veules, and the Dun. The study analyzes hydrological characteristics, current patterns, and tidal influences on the bathing waters.

Location

The bathing areas are located in three communes in Normandy, France: Saint-Valery-en-Caux, Veules-les-Roses, and Veulettes-sur-Mer, in the Côte d'Albâtre coastal community.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted by DDASS (health authority) following 1976 and 2006/7/CE EU bathing water directives. Bacteriological analyses included monitoring of E. coli and enterococci. Shellfish quality assessed through IFREMER analysis at Veules-les-Roses. The study identifies historical control data and applies new directive classification calculations for the 2000-2010 period.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include wastewater collection systems in all three communes, stormwater discharge systems, treatment plant discharges, Saint-Valery-en-Caux port activities, and the Paluel nuclear power plant. River flows carrying bacteriological contamination during rainfall events are documented.
