Plage de la Base de Loisirs de Brionne is a bathing beach located at a former gravel pit (ballastière) in the Risle River valley in northwestern France. The site is a freshwater recreational area situated approximately 50 kilometers from the coast in a temperate oceanic climate region. The beach is separated from the Risle River by a dike measuring 10 to 30 meters in width, with no apparent direct communication between the river and the bathing water. The surrounding landscape is characterized by meadows and forests on the slopes, with major transportation routes including the A28 highway and regional roads crossing the valley.

Water

Freshwater stagnant body of water (plan d'eau) formed from a former gravel extraction pit. The water body is located within the Risle River watershed and is situated immediately adjacent to the Risle River.

Location

Located in the commune of Brionne in the Risle River valley, approximately 50 kilometers from the coast. The study area encompasses 10 communes across the Risle River watershed.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted according to European Directive 2006/7/CE on bathing water quality. Monitoring assessed phytoplankton quality in May 2011, zooplankton quality, and planktonic quality in April and June 2012. Classification based on Escherichia coli and Enterococci parameters with thresholds defined as insufficient, sufficient, good, or excellent quality.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include wastewater systems, livestock and domestic animals in the watershed, eutrophication risks from agricultural activities, and sanitization and parasitic disease risks. Major transportation routes (A28 highway, D418 and D613 roads) crossing the valley present pollution risks from hydrocarbons and metals. Additional investigations planned to assess sediment quality, groundwater monitoring, dike infiltration, and groundwater resurgence.
