Caminha (Foz do Minho) is a rural beach with an extensive strip of sand bordered by a line of dunes. The beach encompasses both a sea concession and a river concession. The bathing water is located at the mouth of the Minho River in the municipality of Caminha.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is in compliance with Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days in the 2024 bathing season had bathing advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution (lasting 72 hours or less) is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of the tributary river during rainfall events, leading to entrainment of microbiological load. Untreated effluent discharges may also occur due to malfunction in the wastewater pumping station. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the Minho River or the local sewerage network. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of blooms. Macroalgae proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence. Phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence.
