Plage du Cap de l'Homy is a sandy beach located in the commune of Lit-et-Mixe in the Landes department of Aquitaine, France. The beach is 500 metres long and 50 metres wide, with a gentle 2% slope. It is situated within a typical Landaise dune zone surrounded by coniferous forests. The beach receives average weekly bathing frequencies of 5,000 visitors, rising to 7,000 on weekends during the bathing season.

Water

Ocean water at Cap de l'Homy. Beach length: 500 metres. Beach width: 50 metres. Beach area: 25,000 square metres. Average slope: 2%. Sandy substrate influences water transparency, which is globally less than 1 Secchi metre. Water circulation flows north to south with rare localised reversals at low tide.

Location

Lit-et-Mixe commune, Landes department, Aquitaine region. Accessed via road D.R. 88 south of the village centre. Numerous parking spaces close to the ocean are available. Beach access is via two wooden pedestrian paths.

Facilities

Lifeguard post located on upper dune with parking and sanitary facilities. Lifeguards are professional (MNS-CRS) and communal water rescue personnel. Toilets and showers available. Surf school on beach. Seasonal restaurants, bakery, tobacconist-newsagent, and beach articles shop located at the base of the dune. Waste collection via bins at parking area with daily removal during season. Animals prohibited on beach.

Season

Mid-June to mid-September.

Water Quality

Classification A (good quality water) recorded from 2006 to 2009. Under the 2006 Directive criteria, the bathing water achieved Excellent quality rating based on data from the previous four years. Since 2005, no imperative value thresholds have been exceeded. The guideline value has been exceeded only twice in sanitised control tests. Autocontrol testing from 2008 onwards has never exceeded AFSSET thresholds, with guideline values exceeded twice.

Risks

Physalis jellyfish present on 24, 26, and 27 July 2010, resulting in bathing closure on those dates. Water transparency is less than 1 metre Secchi depth due to sandy substrate influence.
