Plage de Contis is a sandy beach located in the commune of Saint-Julien-En-Born in the Landes department of Aquitaine, France. The beach is 680 metres long and approximately 60 metres wide, covering about 40,000 square metres. The bathing area experiences an average daily attendance of 5,910 visitors and is characterized by a gentle slope of 1.50 percent. Water transparency is generally good, with Secchi depth greater than 1 metre, though wave and tidal movements on the sandy substrate influence visibility.

Water

Sandy beach bathing area in the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is 680 metres long and approximately 60 metres wide, covering about 40,000 square metres. The mean slope is 1.50 percent. The dominant water current flows north to south; a south to north current occurs during southerly winds. Water depth and flow rate are not specified.

Location

Saint-Julien-En-Born is located 42 kilometres north-west of Dax. The beach is situated at an altitude of 20 metres with coordinates 44° 3' 46'' North, 1° 13' 60'' West. Access is provided by a road with parking; three access points to the beach are available, including one carrossable access to the base of the beach which serves as the main entrance.

Facilities

Lifeguard post located on the dune. Showers and toilets available. Parking with waste collection by daily removal. Snack bar and beach clubs present. Surf school and other water sports activities available. Information point. Animals prohibited.

Mid-June to mid-September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 2006 Directive simulation). Historical classifications from 2006–2010 show consistent Grade A ratings. Most recent microbiological control data shows E. coli and Enterococcus values generally below guide values of 100 UFC/100 mL, with isolated exceedances in 2008 and 2010. Water transparency is greater than 1 metre Secchi depth.

Risks

Jellyfish invasion episode occurred on 27 July 2010 resulting in beach closure. Episodic algal blooms (algae) occur depending on discharge from the Courant de Contis. Substantial volumes of wood debris from the Adour River and coastal currents, household waste from northern Spain, fishing-related debris, and marine animal carcasses wash ashore. Significant sediment suspension occurs due to wave action on the sandy substrate.
