Bernières-Cap Romain is a bathing beach located in the commune of Bernières-sur-Mer in Normandy, France. The beach is part of the Côte de Nacre (Mother-of-Pearl Coast) region. It is situated on a coastline with characteristic tidal and oceanographic conditions typical of the English Channel. The beach serves both recreational swimmers and those engaged in foot-collecting activities.

Water

English Channel waters adjacent to the Normandy coast. Tidal range varies with tidal coefficient; marnage (tidal range) is approximately 8 metres at coefficient 120 and approximately 4 metres at coefficient 45. Currents are bidirectional with the tidal cycle, flowing in different directions during flood tide and ebb tide.

Bernières-sur-Mer commune, Normandy, France. The bathing zone is designated as Bernières-Cap Romain.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the ARS (regional health authority). Monitoring focuses on enterococci and E. coli concentrations. The beach has been subject to contamination episodes related to precipitation, tidal coefficient, and wind conditions. Active management of the beach is conducted by Veolia. Historical data from 2016 to 2019 and 2020 monitoring seasons have been analysed.

Risks

Potential pollution sources have been identified in the study area. Contamination episodes are influenced by rainfall, tidal coefficient, and wind direction. Seaweed accumulation (algal wash-up) events have been documented and analysed.
