Plage la Roquille is a bathing beach located in Carnon, part of the Communauté d'Agglomération du Pays de l'Or. The beach is situated along the Mediterranean coast in the Golfe d'Aigues Mortes. It experiences seasonal and year-round visitor usage, with higher frequencies during summer months. The beach profile has been classified as type 1 under the 2011 bathing water directive framework, amended in 2012.

Water

The bathing area is part of the Golfe d'Aigues Mortes, a Mediterranean coastal zone. The water body is influenced by the Étang de l'Or (lagoon), the Canal du Rhône à Sète, and peripheral wetland zones. The coastal area is affected by wind regimes, wave patterns, and general circulation currents in the gulf.

Location

Carnon, located in the Pays de l'Or agglomeration region. The beach is accessible and experiences both seasonal and non-seasonal visitor traffic.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under the 2006 European directive framework. Bacterial quality classifications are tracked with historical records of beach closures. The monitoring includes assessment of shellfish farming zones and foot-collection areas. Potential proliferation of macroalgae, phytoplankton, and cyanobacteria has been evaluated. Jellyfish invasion episodes have been documented.

Risks

Potential pollution sources include wastewater treatment plant discharges (STEP de Carnon and STEP de Montpellier), storm water overflow systems, rainwater drainage networks, non-collective sanitation systems, agricultural runoff, camping-related discharges, and port activities. Contamination pathways from the Lez, Vidourle river basins and Étang de l'Or have been identified. Animal and camping-car related pollution, as well as accidental contamination events, pose additional risks.
