Location

Senigallia, Ancona Province, Marche region, Italy. The bathing area is located in a highly urbanized zone with tourist infrastructure including bars, restaurants, restrooms, camping, and beach establishments nearby.

Water quality classification: E (Category C bathing water). Escherichia coli monitoring results (2010): January 10 CFU/100 ml, February below determination limit, March 300 CFU/100 ml, April below determination limit, May 80 CFU/100 ml, June 80 CFU/100 ml, July below determination limit, August 10 CFU/10 ml, September 20 CFU/100 ml, October below determination limit, November 10 CFU/100 ml, December below determination limit.

Risks

Sewage overflow events during heavy rainfall as the mixed sewage network has overflow outlets that discharge to locations other than the treatment plant. Phytoplankton proliferation of Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic red-brown alga with oily consistency) occurred in August 2009. A major fuel oil spill occurred on 4 April 2007 from a ruptured pipeline at API Refinery, requiring closure of the bathing area until 23 April 2007.
