Caxias beach has its largest extension located on the right side of the Barcarena river, finishing at the Giribita fort. On the left side of the river, two smaller beaches separated by the São Bruno fort offer pleasant swimming experiences. It is the closest official bathing beach to Lisbon city.

Tejo-WB1 water body within the Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Tejo (Tagus River Basin). The bathing water is fed by the Barcarena river (Ribeira de Barcarena).

Location

Municipality of Oeiras. Located at coordinates 38.69802° latitude, -9.273829° longitude (ETRS89).

Season

June 1st to September 30th (2021 season).

Water Quality

Water quality classification 2020 applies under Decreto-Lei 135/09 of June 3rd, as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 of May 23rd. Monthly sampling frequency. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events occurred during the 2020 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution events (1-2 days) may occur due to increased river discharge from the Barcarena river following heavy rainfall, or from sewerage network failures. Potential microbiological pollution sources include the Barcarena river, surface water drainage networks, sewerage network accidents, and illegal discharges in the watershed. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely.
