Cortegaça bathing water comprises two beaches on the exposed Atlantic mesotidal coast: Cortegaça beach and Cortegaça-Parque Campismo beach. The first is classified as Type I beach in a consolidated urban setting with strong visitor demand, while the second is a Type III beach in a sensitive area also experiencing high bathing demand. The area benefits from various infrastructures, equipment and services.

Location

Municipality of Ovar, Portugal. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 40.939345, Longitude -8.659184.

Season

June 7 to September 7 (2025 bathing season). Sampling frequency: every two weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification conducted in 2024 under Portuguese Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No short-term pollution episodes occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Zero days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Diffuse sources of fecal contamination from urban activities surrounding the area, solid waste from beach activities, marine litter, bird colonies, and high number of users. When Barrinha de Esmoriz (located north of Cortegaça) requires opening to the sea, bathing water quality is monitored and alert procedures are implemented. Phytoplankton proliferation is likely; cyanobacteria and macroalgae proliferation are unlikely.
