Plage de la Côte Rouge is a bathing beach located in the commune of Riantec in the Morbihan department of Brittany, France. The beach has been classified as a Type 1 bathing profile, indicating that the risk of water pollution is not established. The beach is subject to monitoring and management under the Water Framework Directive 2006/7/CE and the Loire-Bretagne river basin management plan. Water quality is evaluated based on bacterial concentrations, primarily intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli, which serve as indicators of fecal contamination.

Water Quality

Classified as Type 1 bathing profile. Water quality evaluation is conducted according to Directive 2006/7/CE, which replaced the earlier 76/106/CEE directive in 2013. Classification is based on bacterial measurements from the previous four seasons using percentile-based criteria. Intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli are the monitored parameters. Total coliforms are no longer part of the regulatory evaluation framework.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include stormwater discharge outlets, port activities and pleasure boats, agricultural pollution, potential illegal waste water discharge from mobile toilets, animal presence on the beach, and bather-related pollution. Potential for phytoplankton and macroalgae proliferation has been assessed.
