The Diemeltalsperre is a reservoir created in 1924 by damming the Diemel and Itter rivers in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district of Hesse, near the North Rhine-Westphalia border. Surrounded by forested mountains of the Sauerland, the bluish-shimmering lake extends over 7 kilometres and serves multiple purposes including water supply for shipping on the Weser River, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. The reservoir covers 165 hectares when fully impounded, holding approximately 20 million cubic metres of water. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, being lowest in winter and highest in spring.
