Twistetalsperre Strandbad Wetterburg

Twistetalsperre – Strandbad Wetterburg is a reservoir built in 1977 for flood protection, covering 76 hectares with drinking water quality. The clear water is surrounded by meadows and forest within a nature conservation area. The beach stretches 250 metres and includes a bathing platform and bathing island. The bathing area receives 150 to 600 visitors during peak season.

Water

Reservoir (Talsperre) with surface area of 76 hectares, maximum depth of 12.2 metres, and mean depth of 7.1 metres. Summer water depth at the dam is approximately 13 metres. Hydropower generation is conducted at the reservoir.

Location

Located on the western shore of the lower section of the Twistetalsperre in Wetterburg, Bad Arolsen, Germany, at 210 metres elevation.

Facilities

Beach bar and catering, disabled-accessible changing rooms with showers and toilets, play and sunbathing areas, children's play equipment including slide and climbing frame, two volleyball fields, boat rental, barrier-free serpentine pathway to the shore accessible to wheelchair users and parents with prams.

Season

1 June 2026 to 16 August 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent water quality for 2021–2025. Monitoring shows Enterococci and Escherichia coli levels predominantly below 15 KBE/100ml. The reservoir has a moderately eutrophic trophic class with good ecological potential. Moderate nutrient loading may result in elevated algae development in summer. Low risk of future cyanobacterial mass occurrence. No known hygienical pollution from nearby wastewater, stormwater, or combined sewer discharges.
