Location

Mola di Bari, Bari Province, Puglia region, Italy. The water body is part of the Bari-S. Vito (Polignano) hydrographic system.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). No direct wastewater discharges are present. No pollution sources have been identified that could convey contaminants into the bathing area. No short-duration pollution events were recorded over the past four years.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and distress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod molluscs. Bathers have experienced temporary discomfort including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during periods of high Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly after storms when sea spray can disperse toxins into the air.
