San Juan reservoir is a continental bathing area located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Madrid, Spain. The reservoir is situated on the Alberche River with a surface area of 650 hectares and volume of 148.30 cubic hectometres. The bathing zone is positioned on the left bank of the reservoir, behind the dam wall. The area is surrounded by dense pine forest and is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds.

Monomictictic, siliceous reservoir on the Alberche River. Surface area: 650 hectares. Volume: 148.30 cubic hectometres. Maximum normal water level elevation: 580 metres. Rocky substrate composed of granite. Stream bed consists of sand and gravel. Catchment area: 1,921.42 square kilometres.

Location

San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Madrid, Spain. Access via the A-5 motorway from Madrid towards Alcorcón, then exit onto the M-501 road (Carretera de los Pantanos) towards Pelayos de la Presa. Before kilometre 51, turn right towards San Antonio. The bathing zone is on the opposite side of the dam wall on the left bank of the reservoir. Parking is available.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted under Royal Decree 1341/2007. Fecal coliforms showed a downward trend from 2002 to 2007. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations remained below guideline values during 2008-2009. Multiple wastewater treatment plants (EDARs) discharge into the Alberche River and tributaries within the influence zone, representing significant contamination pressure.

Risks

Wastewater discharges from multiple EDARs (San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Valdemaqueda, Robledo de Chavela, Rozas de Puerto Real) and other point sources within the catchment represent significant contamination pressure. Autocontamination from bathers identified as a risk factor.
