Water

San Juan reservoir on the Alberche River. Surface area: 650 hectares. Volume: 148.30 cubic hectometres. Maximum normal water level elevation: 580 metres. The reservoir is classified as a heavily modified water body. The riverbed consists of fine sand, silt, and aquatic plants. The catchment area is 399.21 square kilometres with an average slope of 17.8 percent.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted 2003–2009 shows compliance with bathing standards during most seasons. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations remained below guideline values in 2008–2009. Fecal coliform concentrations showed a declining trend from 2002 to 2008. The water body classification is "heavily modified" due to dam regulation.

Risks

Significant microbial contamination sources identified, including autocontamination from bathing area users and discharges from wastewater treatment plants (EDAR San Martín de Valdeiglesias Norte and Noreste) located 1.1 to 3.3 kilometres upstream via the Alberche River.
