Valparaiso Reservoir is a continental bathing area located in Villardeciervos, Zamora, Castilla-León, Spain. The reservoir covers 1,223 hectares with a volume of 163.5 cubic hectometers and is situated on a rocky substrate composed of gneisses. The bathing zone features a beach with medium to coarse sand and grass, bordered by mixed forests and various vegetation including oak, sycamore, poplar, birch, and lavender. The area is used for hydroelectric power generation and supports diverse wildlife including river crayfish, trout, and various fish species.

Water

Reservoir (embalse) on the Tera River in the Duero River basin. Surface area: 1,223 hectares. Volume: 163.5 cubic hectometers. Maximum normal water level: 833 metres. Bed composed of medium to coarse sand with occasional rock blocks. The water body is classified as heavily modified in nature.

Location

Villardeciervos, Zamora, Castilla-León, Spain. Access via road ZA-P-2639 towards Cional; the bathing zone is visible near the bridge with a bar. Parking is available at the site.

Parking available. Bar and merenderos (picnic areas) present. Toilets and showers available. Informational signage present. Waste bins and waste collection services available. Recreational zone. Boat dock. Domestic animals permitted. No lifeguard post. No pools.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted during 2008-2009 swimming seasons shows water quality conforming to imperative values according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations remained below guideline values. Historical data from 2003-2009 indicates the bathing water generally complies with quality standards. Faecal contamination sources identified from wastewater discharges from surrounding settlements and self-contamination from bathers.

Risks

Faecal contamination from multiple point sources including wastewater treatment from surrounding municipalities (Valparaiso, Boya, Villardeciervos, and others) discharging into tributaries. Risk assessment indicates short-duration pressure from these sources. Self-contamination from bathers identified as a significant risk factor.
