France Lake 1 - Excellent

The Lac Vert (Green Lake) is an artificial reservoir in Mittersheim, Moselle, covering approximately 250 hectares at an altitude of 233 metres. The bathing zone is located on the eastern shore of the lake within the leisure facilities area. The lake is fed by several streams originating from the state forest and is traversed by the Sarre Coal Canal, which enables navigation of commercial vessels. The maximum depth of the lake reaches approximately 5 metres, and water levels fluctuate by about 2 metres seasonally.

Water

Artificial lake and reservoir for the Sarre Coal Canal. Surface area approximately 250 hectares. Maximum depth approximately 5 metres. Water level fluctuations of approximately 2 metres between cotes 3.5 and 5.5 metres. Located in the Inferior Iridescent Marls formation of the Upper Triassic. Fed by multiple streams from the state forest and traversed by the Sarre Coal Canal in a south-north direction.

Location

Mittersheim, in the Moselle department, France. The leisure facility is situated on the eastern shore of Lac Vert, with the town of Mittersheim (600 inhabitants) located at the northern edge. The lake extends across the municipalities of Mittersheim, Berthelming, Saint-Jean-de-Bassel, and Bisping. Most of the lake lies within the Lorraine Natural Park.

Season

The official monitoring season is indicated on water level variation charts as running during the bathing season period shown in blue on the 2011–2013 water level records.

Water Quality

The bathing profile was established pursuant to European Directive 2006/7/CE to identify pollution sources affecting water quality. Water quality data were collected for the bathing zone, with results compared to meteorological data. The geological substrate consists of impermeable marls with potential dissolution of gypsum and salt affecting water chemistry. Water quality monitoring indicates potential seasonal variations related to rainfall.

Risks

Potential for cyanobacterial proliferation, macroalgae, and phytoplankton blooms. Short-term pollution risks related to meteorological conditions, bird presence, runoff water, wastewater collector integrity, and traffic routes. Accidental pollution sources have been identified.
