Ex Bagno Rex is a bathing water area in Portici, Naples, characterised by sandy beaches interspersed with rocky structures and breakwaters protecting the railway line that runs along the coast. The surrounding inland areas are intensely urbanised. The bathing water was reclassified in 2024 based on monitoring data from 2020–2023.

Location

Located in Portici, in the province of Naples, Campania region. The monitoring point is delimited by the coordinates of the Ex Bagno Rex area.

Water Quality

Water quality was reclassified in 2024 based on monitoring results from 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Two potential pollution sources are identified: the Pietrarsa pumping station submarine pipeline (40.8199°N, 14.3236°E) and Catavone Canal (40.8169°N, 14.3284°E).

Risks

Sewage collection systems are present in the bathing area, including the coastal sewage collector that gathers discharges from Portici and a lift pump near the Pietrarsa Museum, which conveys effluent to the Naples-Ponticelli treatment plant. A collection sewer for San Giorgio a Cremano utilities is also present.
