Bretteville-sur-Ay is a bathing water zone located in the Manche department, facing Route Départementale 136. The beach is situated in a coastal area subject to tidal influences and exposed to various potential pollution sources including domestic wastewater, agricultural runoff, and industrial discharges. Water quality monitoring has been conducted under both the 76/160/CEE and 2006/7/CE Directives. The bathing area is affected by several rivers and streams in its influence zone, as well as coastal discharges.

Water Quality

Water quality has been classified under Directive 76/160/CEE and simulated under Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring tracked indicator organisms of faecal contamination. The zone has been subject to closure periods based on sanitary control results.

Risks

Potential pollution sources include domestic wastewater from collective and non-collective sewage systems, rainwater runoff, agricultural activities, industrial and craft activities, ports and anchorages, camping facilities, and resuspension of sediments from the Lessay harbour. Rivers and streams (Ay, Dun, Ouve, Brosse) may contribute to bacterial flux during high water periods.
