The Idria stream mouth is a semi-confined marine bathing water located on the Sicilian coast near Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. The seabed is sandy with pebbles and features a gentle slope, with a sandy bottom reaching approximately 3 metres depth near the shoreline and a 50-centimetre-high step called a berm. The beach is 40 to 130 metres wide and has been experiencing limited erosion since 2008. Stationary currents flow in a north-west direction with moderate winds, and water temperatures average between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Water

Semi-confined marine water with sandy seabed interspersed with pebbles. The sandy bottom reaches a depth of approximately 3 metres near the shoreline. A 50-centimetre berm or step is present due to erosive wave action. Beach width ranges from 40 to 130 metres. The area extends for 1.350 square kilometres.

Location

Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Messina province, Sicily. The bathing water extends from Capo Milazzo to Capo Rasocolmo along the coast.

Facilities

A beach bar (lido) named 'Onda Anomala' and fishing huts are present in the area.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Good. Bathing is prohibited from the Mela stream mouth to 100 metres west of the Mela stream mouth. Monitoring shows the presence of overflow discharge points at the Mela stream mouth and Idria stream mouth. Significant pollution sources include combined sewerage system overflows and contaminant transport from the Mela stream following exceptional meteorological events, particularly in winter.

Risks

Stationary currents in a north-west direction with moderate winds. Strong wave action and erosion, particularly during winter due to strong western winds. Sewerage system overflow discharge points at the Mela and Idria stream mouths can cause occasional spills during significant meteorological events, resulting in increased microbiological parameters. An exceptional flood event occurred in October 2015, causing debris and contaminant discharge into the area.
