The Longano stream mouth is a semi-enclosed marine bathing area located in the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto municipality in Sicily. The seabed consists of sand interspersed with pebbles with a gently sloping profile, reaching approximately 3 metres depth near the shoreline. The beach is approximately 35–110 metres wide and is located within an alluvial plain subject to continuous wave action. The area is moderately exposed to northwest and west winds year-round, with marine water temperatures ranging from 20–25 °C and air temperatures from 22–28 °C.

Semi-enclosed marine coastal water. Sandy seabed interspersed with pebbles. Depth reaches approximately 3 metres immediately beyond the shoreline with a 50-centimetre step (berma) due to wave and current erosion. Beach width: 35–110 metres. Area: 1.350 square kilometres. Stationary currents in the northwest direction. Mean marine water temperature: 20–25 °C.

Location

Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto municipality, province of Messina, Sicily. The water body extends from Cape Milazzo to Cape Rasocolmo. Coordinates: 38.169956°N, 15.192967°E.

Facilities

Free beach (spiaggia libera). No specific restrictions on animal access are currently in place.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Swimming prohibition in effect 100 metres east of the Longano stream mouth and 100 metres west of the mouth. Monitoring point located at the highest criticality area. Sewage overflows from the municipal sewer system discharge into the Longano stream mouth during intense rainfall events, increasing microbiological parameters.

Risks

Sewage system overflow structures discharge into the Longano stream mouth. Pollutant transport from the Longano stream surface waters after exceptional rainfall events, particularly during winter. A severe flood event occurred in October 2015, causing debris and contamination in the surrounding area. Marked erosion phenomena observed until 2008; limited erosive trends continue, likely due to achievement of an erosion-resistant threshold. Beach instability due to insufficient river sediment transport.
