Foce Torrente Merula is a sandy beach located at the mouth of the Merula stream in an urbanized coastal area. The beach features artificial structures perpendicular to the shore and is backed by the SS1 road and a park. The bathing water is classified as coastal waters in a mountainous region with low stability. The site received an Excellent water quality classification for the 2019–2022 monitoring period.

Water

Coastal water body at a river mouth. Bathing area extends 0.758 km.

Location

Andora, Savona province, Liguria region. The beach extends between the equipped free beach to the west and Bagni Morgana to the east. The Merula stream mouth discharges directly onto the bathing water.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments with related services, restaurant and bar facilities, accommodation structures, and campsites are present in the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: Excellent. The site is part of Area 3 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network. Reference station at Diano Marina (MARC) recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit between 2019 and 2023. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms.

Risks

Potential short-duration pollution events during heavy rainfall when increased torrent discharge may transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred in Liguria over the past decade, causing temporary and reversible respiratory effects from aerosol inhalation in sensitive individuals. A coastal treatment plant at Porto Villa Fontana discharges approximately 1.6 km offshore, outside the bathing water. Tourism port activity is approximately 1.3 km to the east.
