The Pagliara stream mouth bathing water is located along the Ionian coast of Sicily near the Strait of Messina. The seabed consists of sand and gravel with rapid deepening from the shore. The beach is approximately 40–50 metres wide and composed primarily of sand with some gravel. Water temperatures range from 26 °C in summer to 18 °C in winter. The area experiences strong scirocco and westerly winds and periodic tidal currents known as 'rema' with approximately 12-hour cycles. The beach experiences gradual erosion due to winter storms and marine currents.

Water

Marine coastal water. Continental shelf platform with variable sand and gravel composition (approximately 90% sand with D50 measurement, remainder gravel). Submerged beach slope decreases rapidly beyond an initial 2-metre zone. Water body extends 0.4 km along the coast. Periodic tidal currents ('rema') occur with approximately 12-hour cycles.

Location

Furci Siculo, Messina Province, Sicily. The bathing area extends from Capo Scaletta to Torre Archirafi. Coordinates: 37.961787° N, 15.384582° E (centre). Peak summer attendance is approximately 1500 bathers.

Facilities

Two private beach establishments with refreshment services and toilets; one private beach facility without refreshment services. Public showers located approximately 70 metres along the public shoreline. First aid assistance service. Disabled access ramps spaced approximately every 200 metres. Beach volleyball and beach soccer courts. Designated pet area near the right bank of Pagliara stream mouth.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Monitoring station located at point of highest bather concentration (37.963080° N, 15.385640° E). No diffuse or point sources of pollution identified. No industrial pollution or nitrate pollution detected. Precautionary bathing prohibition exists from 100 metres south of Pagliara stream mouth to the stream mouth itself due to a municipal wastewater treatment facility discharge via submarine pipeline.
