Foce Torrente Sàvoca is a coastal bathing area in Furci Siculo, Sicily, characterized by a gently sloping sandy beach with mixed sediment composition. The continental shelf drops steeply beyond the initial 2-meter zone, featuring sand and gravel substrates. Water temperatures range from 26°C in summer to 18°C in winter. The beach experiences strong scirocco and westerly winds and is subject to the periodic tidal current known as 'rema' that occurs approximately every 12 hours due to proximity to the Strait of Messina.

Water

Coastal marine water. Continental shelf with rapid degradation to significant depths. Substrate composition: approximately 90% sand (D50) and 10% gravel. Beach slope on emerged part approximately 10%; submerged part descends steeply beyond initial 2 meters. Periodic tidal current ('rema') with approximately 12-hour cycle. Strong winter storms and frequent marine currents cause systematic erosion of the Ionian coast.

Location

Furci Siculo, Province of Messina, Sicily. The bathing area extends from Capo Scaletta to Torre Archirafi. Beach width ranges from 40 to 75 meters. Parking and facilities are available along the public shoreline.

Facilities

Two beach establishments (lidi) with food service and sanitary facilities; one private beach establishment without food service. Public showers located along shoreline approximately 70 meters apart. First aid assistance service. Disabled access ramps along shoreline approximately every 200 meters. Beach volleyball and beach soccer facilities. Designated pet area near the right bank of the Pagliara torrent mouth.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. No diffuse or point pollution sources identified. No pollution from industrial installations or nitrates detected. Wastewater treatment via municipal network conveyed to a consortium treatment plant serving Furci Siculo, Pagliara, and Roccalumera, with submarine outfall discharge. No cyanobacterial proliferation events reported. No harmful algal bloom cases reported.

Risks

Precautionary bathing prohibition in areas adjacent to the wastewater treatment plant outfall near the Pagliara torrent. Gradual shoreline variation and erosion caused by strong winter storms and frequent marine currents, not adequately compensated by sediment transport from torrents due to limited rainfall over the past 20 years.
