The Großer Stechlinsee is Brandenburg's deepest natural lake with a maximum depth of nearly 70 metres and one of the state's most nutrient-poor waters. Located on the border with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Pomeranian end moraine landscape, the lake likely formed as a meltwater channel. Despite historical nutrient enrichment from cooling water circulation for the Rheinsberg nuclear power plant (1965 onwards), the lake remains the clearest natural lake in northern Germany, with summer visibility depths in open water between 6.0 and 8.5 metres.
