Menowsee is a small lake of 34 hectares located on the southern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District in the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park. The lake has a maximum depth of 6 meters and is characterized by lush underwater plant growth and dense reed-lined shores bordered by alder forest. The nutrient-rich water has very low transparency, typically between 0.6 and 1.2 meters during the bathing season. The lake is popular with holiday makers seeking peaceful recreational activities away from main traffic routes.

Water

Natural freshwater lake with a surface area of 34.53 hectares, maximum depth of 6 meters, and an almost triangular shape. The water is classified as freshwater with a salinity below 0.5 parts per thousand. Water temperature ranges from 10 to 24.5 degrees Celsius, with a mean of 20 degrees Celsius. pH values range from 8.0 to 8.7, with a mean of 8.3.

Location

Fürstenberg district of Steinförde in the Oberhavel district of Brandenburg. The bathing spot is located at the northern western shore where the Havel River flows along the lake.

Season

Monitoring is conducted every four weeks during the bathing season in accordance with the Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulation.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (ausgezeichnet) for assessment periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli measured at 95th percentile of 26–32 per 100 ml and 90th percentile of 24–30 per 100 ml. Intestinal enterococci measured at 95th percentile of 40–42 per 100 ml and 90th percentile of 33–35 per 100 ml. No single value exceedances of microbiological parameters E. coli and intestinal enterococci have been recorded. Water transparency is very low due to high nutrient content.

Risks

Occasional cyanobacterial blooms (algal blooms) occur during the bathing season, with low to moderate risk of future mass development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants are present. Persons with heightened sensitivity and particularly children are advised to avoid bathing during algal bloom events or to shower after bathing.
