The Großer Stienitzsee is a natural lake located approximately 30 km from Berlin's city centre on the Barnim ground moraine plain. Its basin, measuring roughly 3 km long and 650 m wide and extending from northeast to southwest, was formed during the last ice age by meltwater erosion. The lake covers 211 hectares with a maximum depth of 14.5 metres and a mean depth of 6.6 metres. The main basin has steep shores, particularly on the eastern side, and forms a stable temperature stratification in summer. The lake is fed by the Rüdersdorfer Mühlenfließ from the north and the Stranggraben, both originating from a nature reserve. The catchment area encompasses approximately 116 square kilometres, predominantly forested (64%) and agricultural (16%), with relatively high settlement coverage (14%).
