Großer Vätersee is a natural lake located 12 km south of Templin on the southern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The oval basin covers 13 hectares with a maximum depth of 12 metres. The lake is fed entirely by groundwater with no surface inflows or outflows. The lake has recovered significantly since the 1990s after wastewater discharges were stopped, and now maintains good water clarity with visibility averaging 2.3 metres in summer. The bathing water consistently achieves excellent quality classification.
