Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Großsee is a natural freshwater lake in the Lieberose Heath and Schlaube River area, approximately 15 km west of Guben in Brandenburg. The lake covers 31 hectares with a maximum depth of 9 metres and belongs to the Schlaube Valley Nature Park. It is a relatively nutrient-poor, soft water lake with high water transparency, typically exceeding 1.0 metre visibility during the bathing season. The lake basin was formed by glacial activity during the last ice age.

Water

Natural freshwater lake. Surface area 31 hectares. Maximum depth 9 metres. Mean depth 5.8 metres. Slightly acidic soft water with pH range 6.8 to 8.8. Salinity less than 0.5 per mil. Water temperatures range from 11 to 25.1 degrees Celsius. Water transparency mean 1.5 metres, ranging from 1.2 to 1.8 metres. Groundwater-dependent water levels.

Location

Located approximately 15 km west of Guben in Brandenburg, on the eastern edge of the former Lieberose Heath military training ground. The bathing area is designated as Tauer. A campsite with restaurant and shop is located at the southeastern end of the lake. The settlement of Teerofen adjoins the lake to the north.

Facilities

Water pedal boats available. Bungalow rental available. Campsite with restaurant and shop at southeastern end of lake. Multiple small bathing areas around the lake. Nature trail around the lake with seven information stations.

Season

Monitored through four-weekly sampling by the district health authority in accordance with Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent for all assessment periods from 2016 to 2024. Escherichia coli levels (2021-2024): 95-percentile 32/100ml, 90-percentile 28/100ml. Intestinal enterococci levels (2021-2024): 95-percentile 40/100ml, 90-percentile 34/100ml. No exceedances of microbiological parameter threshold values recorded. No cyanobacteria blooms observed during the bathing season. Nutrient status assessed as nutrient-poor.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present with medium risk of future mass development of phytoplankton. No cyanobacteria blooms observed and no future risk identified. No short-term microbiological pollution expected. No other pollution identified.
