Mochowsee is a lake in East Brandenburg situated 25 km north of Cottbus and 2 km south of Schwielochsee. The elongated, irregularly shaped basin stretches 2.6 km in a north-south direction with a surface area of 122 hectares and maximum depth of 12.2 m. The southern area contains an island called Karnickelberg that rises 9 m above the water surface. The lake forms stable temperature layering during summer and drains via the Möllenseegraben to the Spree River. The catchment area is dominated by forest (74%) with only 8% agricultural use.

Water

Natural lake with surface area of 122.33 hectares, mean depth 5 m, maximum depth 12.2 m. Water exchange time 4.7 years. Sandy geology and shoreline. Water temperature ranges from 13.2 °C to 24.2 °C (mean 21 °C). pH ranges from 8.14 to 8.91 (mean 8.55). Transparency ranges from 0.7 m to 2.0 m (mean 1.3 m). Freshwater with salt content less than 0.5‰.

Location

The bathing site is located at Campingplatz Lamsfeld on the southern east shore of the lake. Mochowsee lies in the East Brandenburg Heathland and Lake District, a western extension of the Lieberose Heath. The town of Mochow is approximately 1 km west of the lake, and a bungalow settlement exists on the northern east shore.

Season

Monitored under Brandenburg bathing water regulations with water sampling every four weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for monitoring periods 2016–2019, 2017–2020, 2018–2021, 2019–2022, 2020–2023, and 2021–2024. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations at 95th and 90th percentiles both measured at 15 per 100 ml for periods 2020–2023 and 2021–2024. No individual parameter exceedances recorded. Ecological status classified as unsatisfactory (ÖZK 4) according to Water Framework Directive (2024). Natural nutrient content is mesotrophic but measured nutrient content is eutrophic.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No cyanobacteria water blooms observed during bathing season. No future risk of cyanobacteria mass development identified. No future risk of macrophyte or macroalga mass development identified. No risk of infection from cercarial dermatitis. Short-term microbiological pollution not expected. Other pollution not expected.
