Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hald Sø at Dollerup is a bathing site on Denmark's second-deepest lake, located immediately southwest of Viborg. The beach consists of sand with a large grassed area approximately 100 metres wide, bordered by bushes and trees. The water bottom is sandy with soft sediment, nearly always clear with good visibility. The water remains relatively cold due to numerous springs feeding the lake.

Water

Hald Sø is one of Denmark's largest and deepest lakes, approximately 31 metres deep. Water temperature in summer ranges from 14–20 degrees Celsius. Weak currents run towards the outlet at Non Mølle Å in the northern end. The lake receives water from numerous small watercourses and spring streams. The outlet, Non Mølle Å, flows to Vedsø, which continues to Nørreå, then Gudenåen, which enters Randers Fjord.

Season

Monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Optimal conditions for algal growth occur from April to October.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality for 2023 based on data from 2020–2023. Water quality is monitored routinely during the bathing season for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. The lake's ecological status is classified as Moderate according to the state water management plans 2022–2027, though it does not meet the Good Ecological and Chemical Status target. The lake is designated as a Scientific Reference Area.

Risks

Overflow events from combined sewage systems during heavy rainfall may cause temporary faecal contamination. Nutrient leaching from agricultural land in the catchment may affect algae growth. Algal blooms occur regularly in the nutrient-rich lake during warm, calm, sunny weather from April to October. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can appear in late summer, potentially producing cyanotoxins at high concentrations.
