Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Vedsø is a freshwater lake with a surface area of 1.5 km² located approximately 7 metres above sea level in Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The lake is divided into a western and eastern basin, with the bathing area situated in the eastern basin on the north side. Swimming opportunities may be limited by reed vegetation along the shoreline, and the lake can experience significant algae growth during summer months. The lake bed consists of a mixture of sand and soft bottom.

Water

Freshwater lake with surface area of 1.5 km². The western basin is approximately 1,200 metres long and 600 metres wide. The eastern basin is approximately 2 km long and 400 metres wide. Water temperature in the bathing areas during summer is 14–20 degrees Celsius. The lake has inflows from Hald Sø via Non Mølle Å on the western side and minor inflows on the northern and southeastern sides. The outlet is to Nørreå at Rindsholm on the eastern end. Weak current conditions flow towards the outlet at Non Mølle Å on the northern end.

Location

The bathing area is located in Vedsø in Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The parking area is situated behind Viborg Airfield, approximately 500 metres from the lake via a forest path.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2023: Excellent (based on data from 2020–2023). Monitoring is conducted routinely during the bathing season for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). According to water area management plans 2022–2027, Vedsø is in poor ecological condition. Identified pollution sources include overflow events from combined sewerage systems in the catchment area during heavy rainfall events, and leaching of nutrients and pesticides from agricultural land in the catchment area.

Risks

The water can be plagued by significant algae growth during summer months. Risk of cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms during late summer following extended periods of warm and sunny weather. Risk of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) from parasitic flatworm larvae, with documented cases occurring in 2018. Algae blooms can occur from April to October under optimal conditions of abundant light, nutrients, and warmth.
