La Meuse is a bathing area located on the Hérault river in the commune of Gignac in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The bathing zone is situated immediately downstream of the La Meuse dam and upstream of the urbanised zone of Gignac. The beach consists of large pebbles with a length of 150 metres and a width of 80 metres, covering a total area of 3,000 square metres. The zone is surrounded by extensive agricultural areas dedicated to viticulture.

Water

Hérault river. Bathing zone length: 150 metres. Bathing zone width: 80 metres. Surface area of beach: 3,000 square metres. Average width: 65 metres. Average depth: 1.5 metres. Slope: weak to strong with a pit at the base of the dam. Low current velocity under dry conditions: 0.03 m/s. Mean discharge during low water (basses eaux): 2.68 m³/s in August.

Location

Gignac, Hérault department, Languedoc-Roussillon region. Located downstream of the La Meuse dam. Parking available with 50 spaces and an information panel nearby.

Facilities

No lifeguard surveillance. No sanitary facilities. No waste bins. Camping nearby. Telephone cabin at proximity. Picnic area on left bank. Easy public access to beach and bathing zone for all.

Season

Summer season. Official monitoring conducted during summer months (June through August).

Water Quality

Bacteriological monitoring data from 2006 to 2010 shows E. coli and Enterococci measurements. Testing revealed variable results with some elevated readings, particularly in summer 2008 and 2010. The 95th percentile for E. coli ranged from 375 to 619 CFU/100ml and for Enterococci from 51 to 143 CFU/100ml across monitoring points.

Risks

Dam upstream creates very low flow velocities in the water body. Carrière (quarry) located on left bank. No major risk from the surrounding viticulture activity. Relatively low runoff velocity due to very weak to null slopes in the surrounding agricultural plain.
