Hjarbæk Strand is an artificial beach located on the south side of Hjarbæk Fjord near the town of Hjarbæk. The beach is approximately 70 metres long and 15 metres wide, with sand substrate mixed with small stones. The water is very shallow. Due to poor water quality, bathing is not recommended at this location.

Water

Hjarbæk Fjord is a branch of Limfjorden, 12 km long and up to 5 metres deep. The fjord has a water area of 24 km² (1.7% of Limfjorden's total area). Water flow is 16% of Limfjorden's total water supply. The bathing area is very shallow. Summer water temperatures range from 13 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Location

Hjarbæk Fjord, south side near Hjarbæk town, approximately 10 km north of Viborg and 20 km east of Skive. Parking available 100 metres from the beach.

Facilities

Parking area, toilet at harbour, tables and benches, waste bins.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring conducted during the bathing season. Weekly analysis of water quality samples during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Poor for 2023 based on data from 2020-2023. Classification is based on fecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) measurements. Main pollution sources identified include overflow structures from pumping stations during extreme rainfall, misconnections in sewage systems, toilet tank emptying from boats at the nearby marina, and manure spills. Nutrient runoff from agricultural areas and potential algal blooms also affect quality.

Risks

Risk of algal blooms from April to October in warm, calm, sunny weather. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in late summer with potential toxin production. Seaweed accumulation and washup on beach during storms and onshore winds, particularly in August. Problems with seaweed decomposition causing oxygen depletion and water cloudiness.
