Virksund Strand is a bathing beach located in the southeastern part of Lovns Bredning near the outlet of Hjarbæk Fjord, with views of Virksund Dam. The beach is approximately 500 meters long and 10–15 meters wide, composed of sand with stones and shells on the northeastern side and pure sand at the tip of the headland and toward the harbor. The seabed consists of sand and stones. The beach has a Blue Flag designation.

Water

Brackish water body situated in Lovns Bredning and Hjarbæk Fjord. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 22°C during the bathing season. Distance to 2-meter depth varies: approximately 70 meters on the eastern-facing section and 80–100 meters in the bay on the western side of the headland. Water depth exceeds 6 meters at the tip of the headland. The dominant current direction is northward due to outflowing water from Hjarbæk Fjord, with very strong currents possible at the headland tip.

Location

Virksund, Højslev, 7840. The beach is located on the headland north of Virksund Marina, accessed via Sandkrogen leading to the marina, then along a side road to the beach. Good parking is available, with a branched trail system from the parking area leading to different parts of the beach.

Facilities

Toilets, rescue rings, tables and benches, waste bins, pétanque court, information board about hiking routes in the area, information board warning about undercurrents. The area is a bird reserve and windsurfing is prohibited. Signs indicate fishing is forbidden around the dam. Dogs must be kept on a leash on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as 'excellent', the highest classification under bathing water regulations. Classification based on data from 2016–2019 for E. coli and enterococci. Analysis of bathing water data over the last 5 years shows very stable conditions and low bacterial levels.

Risks

High risk of toxic blue-green algae blooms due to low salinity and high nutrient levels. High risk of mass blooms of other microscopic algae species during bathing season; the area is among the most nutrient-polluted sections of Limfjorden. High risk of large quantities of seaweed washing ashore due to Hjarbæk Fjord conditions; the bay near the marina is most exposed to large accumulations. Strong currents possible at the headland tip; bathing at the headland tip is discouraged. Low risk of fecal pollution, manure spills, chemical pollution from shipping incidents, and oxygen depletion. Pacific oysters unlikely due to low salinity.
