Hotel Atlantic is a bathing beach in Senigallia, Ancona province, located along the Adriatic coast in the Marches region. The beach consists of calcareous gravel with a moderate slope of 5%. It extends 800 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a maximum daily bather capacity of 4,000 during high season. The surrounding area is predominantly urbanized with tourist facilities and is crossed by a railway line.

Water

Adriatic Sea coastal water body. Beach dimensions: 800 meters long and 60 meters wide. The distance between average low water and high water (safe water limit) is 50 meters. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimeters. The receiving waterbody includes the Misa River mouth.

Location

Senigallia, Ancona province, Marches region, Italy. The competent authority is the Municipality of Senigallia (Piazza Roma, 8 - 60019 Senigallia) with the local maritime office.

Facilities

Bar, restaurants, toilets, camping, and bathing establishments. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. Sewage treatment: the municipal sewer network serves all urbanized territory. Wastewater is treated at a facility with activated sludge technology located on via Po, designed for 20,000 cubic meters per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants. Escherichia coli monitoring results (2010): January 10 CFU/100 ml, February below detection limit, March 300 CFU/100 ml, April below detection limit, May 80 CFU/100 ml, June 80 CFU/100 ml, July below detection limit, August 10 CFU/100 ml, September 20 CFU/100 ml, October below detection limit, November 10 CFU/100 ml, December below detection limit.

Risks

Heavy rainfall events cause increased wastewater flows and sewer overflow discharges to alternative outlets rather than the treatment plant. A major incident occurred on 04/04/2007 when a rupture in the API Refinery pipeline released heating oil into the sea, causing temporary closure of the bathing area. Phytoplankton proliferation occurred in 2009 with a large bloom of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica throughout August, causing brown-reddish coloration and oily water consistency.
