Kleßener See is a natural lake located approximately 16 km northeast of Rathenow in the Westhavelland Nature Park. The lake is 1.5 km long with an area of 52 hectares and a basin-shaped bed with mean depth of 2.5 m and maximum depth of 4.2 m. The catchment area is small at 4.4 km², comprising 47% agricultural land, 36% forest, and 7% settlements. Water exchange occurs approximately every four years.

Water

Natural lake with surface area of 52 hectares. Mean depth 2.5 m, maximum depth 4.2 m. Unlaminated water. Water exchange time approximately 4.7 years. Slightly alkaline (pH mean 8.07), freshwater (salinity < 0.5‰). Water temperature range 12.5–27.8°C (mean 22°C). Transparency range 0.6–2 m (mean 1.3 m). Ecological status class: moderate (ÖZK 3) under Water Framework Directive.

Location

Approximately 16 km northeast of Rathenow in Brandenburg, Germany. A small campingplatz is located at the eastern end of the lake. The responsible authority is Landkreis Havelland, Gesundheitsamt, Forststr. 45 A, 14712 Rathenow.

Season

Monitoring conducted year-round with samples collected every four weeks in accordance with Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for assessment periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli 95-percentile ranges from 136–194 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile ranges from 32–46 CFU/100 ml. No individual value exceedances of microbiological parameters E. coli and intestinal enterococci recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms observed. Lake shows signs of eutrophication with summer visibility often below 1 m and occasional oxygen depletion in deeper water, though condition has improved since early 1990s.

Risks

Risk of phytoplankton mass development. No danger from cyanobacterial blooms. No risk of cercarial dermatitis. Short-term pollution not expected. No other pollution expected.
