Köthener See is a natural lake located approximately 25 km northwest of Lübben on the northern edge of the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The lake covers 149 hectares and is very shallow with a mean depth of 1.9 m and maximum depth of 5.2 m. The elongated basin runs east-west and contains a large island in its center. The lake receives water from the Spree via the Dahme bypass canal and the Rand canal, with its entire catchment area covering 52 km² composed primarily of forest (64%), agricultural land (11%), and grassland (14%).
