Motol is a natural outdoor bathing pond located in Prague at an elevation of 280 metres. The pond covers 1.2 hectares and has grassy beaches 150 metres in length. It features excellent water quality classification based on microbial testing, though eutrophication and algal blooms have been observed, particularly in 2017 and 2018.

Water

Natural pond covering 1.2 hectares at 280 metres elevation. Basic hydrological characteristics: discharge rate Q = 0.012 m³/s with regulated inflow via bypass, specific runoff q = 1.73 l/s.km². Catchment area 6.95 km².

Location

Prague. Operated by the Motol open-air bathing facility (www.koupalistemotol.cz). Visitor numbers are less than 500.

Toilets, outdoor showers with drinking water, changing cabins, lifeguard, refreshment facilities, nudist beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on microbial contamination standards. Total phosphorus concentration data not available since 2012. Phytoplankton biomass limit of 50 µg/l was exceeded during 2016–2020, particularly in 2017–2018 with maximum values of 138 µg/l. Cyanobacteria maximum of 190,000 cells/ml recorded in 2018. Water transparency ranges 0.5 to >2.5 metres, declining below 1 metre toward end of season in 2017–2018. Quality deterioration observed from 2017 onwards with increased chlorophyll concentrations and risky cyanobacteria types.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms, particularly in 2017–2018. Phytoplankton biomass exceeded safety thresholds during 2016–2020. Water transparency reductions in recent years. Cercarian dermatitis risk associated with duck feeding.
