Krossinsee is a natural lake located on the south-eastern border of Berlin in the Berlin-Fürstenwalder Spree Valley Lowland. It has a surface area of 163 hectares and a maximum depth of 5 metres, with an average depth of 2.9 metres. The lake is connected to Wernsdorfer See and receives inflow from Wernsdorfer Luch in the south-east. The southern shore is fully populated, with the former fishing village of Wernsdorf and the Ziegenhals residential area bordering the lake. The lake is a popular recreation area, especially for water sports enthusiasts, and is designated as a federal waterway.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 162.7 hectares, maximum depth of 5 metres, and average depth of 2.9 metres. The lake receives inflow from Wernsdorfer Luch. Water temperature ranges from 13.3 °C to 23.4 °C (average 21 °C). Water transparency ranges from 0.4 to 2 metres (average 1 metre). The lake is unsheathed with no stable temperature layering. Water exchange time is 7.6 years.

Location

Wernsdorf area at the south-eastern border of Berlin. The bathing location is identified as Wernsdorf on Krossinsee. Parking is restricted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent for all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Microbiological parameters: E. coli 95-percentile values range from 40–63 per 100 ml; intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values range from 32–41 per 100 ml. No individual value exceedances of microbiological parameters have been recorded. Ecological status class is unsatisfactory (ÖZK 4). The lake is eutrophic despite being naturally mesotrophic. Summer plankton blooms occur, indicated by extremely high oxygen levels in surface water and acute oxygen deficiency in deep water.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms observed occasionally during the bathing season, with low to moderate risk of future mass development. Macroalgae and water plants are present. Phytoplankton shows medium risk of future mass development. Sensitive persons should avoid bathing during cyanobacteria blooms.
