The Sampzon bathing area is located on the Ardèche river in a highly tourisitic section upstream of the Ardèche Gorges, at the confluence of the Chassezac and Baume valleys. The area experiences significant seasonal population growth due to numerous campsites and nearby tourist attractions including Pont-d'Arc and the villages of Ruoms and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc. Multiple recreational activities occur on the Ardèche including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. The bathing water is vulnerable to contamination from precipitation, treatment plant discharges, and high visitor frequency, particularly during the summer season.
