L'Epine is a coastal commune on the northwest coast of Île de Noirmoutier with two managed bathing beaches: Plage de La Bosse and Plage de Saint Jean (La Cabane). Both beaches feature fine sand with gentle slopes toward the sea and are bordered by natural dunes planted with pines. The bathing zones are situated on shallow sand banks at the foot of the natural dune. Water quality is classified as good according to the 2006/7 directive based on measurements from the last three bathing seasons.

Water

Oceanic coastal water bodies. Plage de La Bosse: 330 meters long, 20 meters wide at high tide, expanding to 120–130 meters at wide tides. Slope of 7–8%. High tide level at 6.50 m CM; low tide at 0.50 m CM. Plage de Saint Jean: 170 meters long, 20 meters wide at high tide, expanding to 140–150 meters at wide tides. High tide level at 7 m CM. Dominant currents on the northwest at 1–3 knots. Summer water temperature ranges from 17–23°C; air temperature 18–28°C.

Location

L'Epine is located on the northwest coast of Île de Noirmoutier. Plage de La Bosse is located at the edge of the camping area and Bois de la Bosse with easy access and parking. Plage de Saint Jean (La Cabane) is situated 1 km from the town center with easy access and nearby parking.

Facilities

Parking available. Designated channels for windsurfing and light boat launching. Animals prohibited by municipal bylaw with public notice displayed.

Season

Weekends from April to September; summer season July and August.

Water Quality

Water quality classification A (good quality). In 2010, 16 samples were taken at Plage de La Bosse with 14 rated BON (good) and 2 rated MOYEN (moderate). Escherichia coli and fecal streptococci levels were generally below 15/100 ml. Two samples showed higher readings: 141 n/100ml E. coli on 22 July 2010 and 77 n/100ml E. coli on 7 September 2010.

Risks

Seaweed deposits (goémon) occur on Plage de La Bosse, with varying types and quantities depending on wind direction and wave conditions. Significant deposits required clearing operations before the 2009 and 2010 bathing seasons. Conditions vary by wind direction: northeast winds provide calm, protected conditions; west or southwest winds combined with swell create moderate to rough bathing conditions, particularly on the northern part of Plage de La Bosse.
