L'Épine is a seaside commune located on the northwestern coast of the Île de Noirmoutier. The bathing area consists of two sandy beaches with fine sand and gentle slopes toward the sea. The beaches are bordered by a natural dune planted with pine trees, with urbanized zones including secondary residences and a municipal campground behind the dune. Water temperatures during summer range from 17 to 23°C. The area has not experienced stormy episodes in recent years.

Water

Two sandy beaches with fine sand. Plage de la Bosse is 330 meters long with a width of 20 meters at high tide, expanding to 120–130 meters at low tide during spring tides. The slope is 7–8% toward the sea. Plage de Saint Jean is 170 meters long with a width of 20 meters at high tide, expanding to 140–150 meters at low tide during spring tides. Circular currents occur near Plage de la Bosse; dominant currents on the northwest of Plage de Saint Jean range from 1 to 3 knots. Water temperature during summer: 17–23°C.

Location

L'Épine, northwestern coast of Île de Noirmoutier, Vendée department. Plage de la Bosse is located adjacent to the campground and Bois de la Bosse. Plage de Saint Jean (la Cabane) is situated 1 km from the town center with easy access and nearby parking.

Season

Weekends from April to September; daily bathing season in July and August.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Good (Class A) according to Directive 2006/7 based on results from the last three bathing seasons. Monitoring in 2010 comprised 16 samples from Plage de la Bosse: 14 classified as Good and 2 as Moderate. Bacteriological analysis shows Escherichia coli and fecal streptococci levels generally below 15/100 ml, with occasional exceedances (e.g., 141 n/100 ml E. coli on 22 July 2010; 161 n/100 ml fecal streptococci on 24 August 2010). Total coliforms were below 10 n/100 ml; intestinal enterococci were below 15 n/100 ml.

Risks

Deposits of seaweed (goémon) periodically occur on Plage de la Bosse. Algae composition and quantities vary depending on wind direction and wave conditions. Plage de la Bosse is more exposed to this phenomenon and required cleanup before the 2009 and 2010 bathing seasons. Wind and wave conditions affect water conditions: westerly and southwesterly winds combined with swell and currents create rough conditions, particularly in the northern part of Plage de la Bosse.
