France Lake 1 - Excellent

Plage des Grangettes is a supervised bathing beach on Lake Saint-Point in the Jura region of France, located in the northwest section of the lake. The beach was artificially modified in 1994 with a dike to create a bathing basin, but this structure was removed in 2007 due to water quality and safety concerns. Today it is a managed and monitored bathing site with an estimated 15,000 swimmers per season during the summer bathing period.

Water

Lake Saint-Point occupies a synclined valley with a northeast-southwest axis. The lake covers an area of 5.2 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 43 meters and a volume of 81.6 million cubic meters, making it the fourth largest natural lake in France. The lake receives water from two main sources: the Doubs River (which also serves as its outlet) and the Bleu Spring. The bathing zone has a stony bottom more or less covered with silt.

Location

Located at the village of Les Grangettes in the northwest section of Lake Saint-Point. Accessible via a municipal road with a parking area in immediate proximity. Additional temporary parking is provided during peak season in a mown field, and parking is also available along the access road. Parking is prohibited on the lake side within 50 meters before the beach.

Facilities

The beach is equipped with showers, toilets with drinking water, a first aid post (mobile structure), an emergency telephone booth, and a rescue buoy. A nearby water sports base offers activities including canoe-kayaking, sailing, and pedal boats. A snack bar managed by the sailing club provides drinks, ice cream, and light refreshments during summer. Free leisure equipment is available including a volleyball court, pétanque court, and picnic tables. A pontoon for boat mooring is located near the beach with restricted access to swimmers.

Season

The official bathing season runs from the first weekend of summer school holidays through the last weekend of August. During this period, lifeguards are present on weekdays from 13:30 to 18:30 and on weekends and public holidays from 11:30 to 18:30.

Water Quality

Lake Saint-Point was evaluated in 2015 as having medium ecological potential by the Water Agency. The lake suffers from an excess of organic matter and deoxygenation of deep layers, a condition that has worsened since the 1990s. The beach is surrounded by vegetated areas protected under a prefectoral biotope protection order established on October 12, 1995, which preserves vegetation and wetland zones contributing to water self-purification.

Risks

Bird frequentation (swans, ducks, seagulls, gulls) may increase the risk of bather's dermatitis, a temporary skin condition caused by larvae penetrating the skin. Six hundred fifty cases were recorded in 1994 and 300 cases in 1995 across both Saint-Point and Remoray lakes, but this outbreak subsided and no infected persons have been reported at this bathing zone since. Dogs are not permitted on the beach.
