Labergement-Sainte-Marie beach is located on the eastern shore of Lake Remoray at 850 m altitude within the National Nature Reserve. The beach was artificially created in 1968 and is maintained by the municipality, which adds sand before the summer season. It features grassy banks, a sandy strip at the water's edge, and a stony bottom partially covered with mud. The bathing zone comprises a small and large pool marked by water lines covering approximately 80 m × 60 m, with water depth varying between 0 and 2 m depending on lake levels.

Water

Lake Remoray is a natural freshwater lake at 850 m altitude occupying a syncline valley. The lake covers 95 hectares with a maximum depth of 29 m and a volume of 9.6 million cubic metres. Water in the bathing zone is stagnant with no significant currents. The lake receives water from several tributaries including the Vurpillières stream and the Drésine, with the Taverne as its outflow.

Location

The beach is situated in the municipality of Labergement-Sainte-Marie, near the village of Remoray, on the eastern shore of Lake Remoray. Access is via a municipal road to a parking area opposite the Lake camping site, followed by approximately 350 m on foot. Alternative access is available from the Nature Reserve visitor centre car park via a marked 850 m hiking trail.

Facilities

Showers, toilets, drinking water point, security post with telephone, waste bins, recycling bins, information board displaying water temperature and bathing quality. The beach is part of a leisure facility with nearby playground, tennis courts, football pitch, volleyball court, skateboard park, ping-pong tables, and picnic tables. Lifeguards (rescue swimmers) in pairs supervise the beach during the bathing season: 13h30 to 18h30 on weekdays and 11h30 to 18h30 on weekends and public holidays.

Season

The official bathing season extends from the first weekend of summer school holidays to the last weekend of August. Lifeguard supervision and beach maintenance occur during this period only.

Water Quality

The lake was evaluated in 2015 as having poor ecological potential by the Water Agency. It suffers from excess organic matter and deoxygenation of deep layers, a problem that has worsened since the 1990s. Water quality is monitored and information is displayed at the security post. No specific pollution sources are identified for the bathing zone itself.

Risks

Swimmer's dermatitis may occur due to contact with cercarian larvae from infected waterfowl and molluscs, though cases have significantly declined since peaks of 650 cases in 1994 and 300 in 1995. No reported infections at the bathing zone in recent years. Wild waterfowl including mute swans, mallards, coots, and grebes frequent the beach, particularly at dawn and dusk.
