Lac de Haute Mayenne is an artificial freshwater lake created by dam construction in 1978, located on the communes of Ambrières-les-Vallées, la Haie Traversaine, Saint-Loup-du-Gast and Saint-Fraimbault-de-Prières in the Mayenne department. The lake serves primarily to support low-water flows for downstream drinking water extraction. A leisure facility on the right bank is being developed to include a bathing zone of approximately 1,600 square metres, recreational nautical activities, and a wake park. The bathing area will be situated at the grassed area level at the two pontoons.

Water

Artificial lake created by a dam in 1978. Surface area of 123 hectares with an average depth of 2.5 metres and a storage capacity of approximately 3 million cubic metres of water. Fed by three major tributaries: the Varenne, Mayenne, and Colmont rivers.

Location

Located on the right bank of Lac de Haute Mayenne on the commune of la Haie Traversaine. The city of Mayenne is situated approximately 6 km downstream of the dam. The leisure facility has a parking area and is accessible by camping car via a dedicated service point at the entrance.

Facilities

The leisure facility includes changing rooms, halls, hangars, and a parking area. The bathing zone will feature an inflatable aquatic playground (WIBIT). A children's play area will be provided on the grassed area. A snack bar will be available near the beach. The site will be equipped with a camping car service point at the entrance.

Season

In 2019, the bathing site opening was programmed for May to October (6 months). From 2020 onwards, opening was to be extended from March to October (8 months).

Water Quality

A feasibility study analysed three types of potential or confirmed risks: bacteriological risk, cyanobacteria proliferation risk, and contamination risk from animals (leptospirosis). Water quality monitoring was conducted by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the departmental observatory. Supplementary monitoring campaigns were carried out during summer 2018 including physico-chemical, bacteriological, and algal population analyses. Pollution sources investigated included collective and individual sanitation systems, semi-collective sanitation from the leisure base, rainwater management, and agricultural activity impacts.

Risks

Bacteriological contamination risk identified. Cyanobacteria proliferation risk assessed. Leptospirosis contamination risk from animals identified. Erosion risks from agricultural areas characterised. Pollution sources from both collective and individual sanitation systems documented.
