Lac De Sille Le Guillaume

Sillé-Plage is an authorized bathing area in the municipality of Sillé le Guillaume. The beach spans approximately 200 meters and features artificial sandy shores bordered by a wall of stacked rocks. The water body is the Grand Étang with a maximum depth of 2 meters. The bathing area is prohibited to all animals and navigation. Water quality is regularly classified as excellent, with monitoring conducted during July and August.

Water

Grand Étang (large pond). Length: approximately 200 meters. Maximum depth: 2.00 meters. Total volume: 400,000 cubic meters. Water renewal rate: approximately 10 to 15 days at best, with source water flow of about 0.5 cubic meters per second during winter. Water sources include upstream contributions from Étang des Modères and Étang Neuf, plus rainwater from the hippodrome and surrounding areas.

Location

Sillé le Guillaume municipality in France. The bathing area is accessible on foot; bicycles and other vehicles are prohibited on the beach.

Facilities

Women's sanitation facilities: 2 toilets. Men's sanitation facilities: 1 toilet and 2 urinals. Disabled access toilet. Sink with soap dispenser and paper towels. Waste collection: small containers and bins emptied daily as needed; waste removal twice to three times per week during tourist season. Selective waste collection at two locations (and a third planned).

Season

Official monitoring period: July and August (2 months). Bathing prohibited outside this period.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Category A). Monitoring results from 2007–2010 show Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci levels consistently below thresholds for excellent quality (below 200 and 500 CFU/100mL respectively). A transient cyanobacteria peak was observed in early July 2010 following a sharp temperature increase. Water pH ranges between 8.0 and 8.6. Water transparency regularly falls below 1.00 meter. No tar residues, floating materials, mineral oils, phenols, surfactants, or foam detected. No green algae proliferation or foam deposits observed.

Risks

Cyanobacteria observed during periods of high temperature. Water transparency issues requiring cleaning and potential installation of floating barriers to slow sediment entry. Theoretical agricultural pollution sources identified upwind but with weak influence due to filtration through intermediary ponds. Accidental hydrocarbon spills possible from upstream farm or roads RD 105 and RD 203 but with low probability and weak influence due to soil filtration.
