Plage des Arènes is a bathing beach located in the commune of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The beach profile was updated in May 2021 to assess water quality, identify pollution sources, and define management measures. The assessment follows European directive 2006/7/CE requirements for bathing water quality monitoring and includes analysis of historical water quality data from 2016 to 2020.

Season

Monitoring and surveillance conducted during summer periods with revised profile update frequency: every 4 years for good quality water, every 3 years for sufficient quality water, and every year for insufficient quality water.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified and monitored between 2016 and 2020 using E.Coli and Enterococci parameters according to directive 2006/7/CE. Analysis results from ARS (Regional Health Authority) sampling campaigns in 2020 were used to determine quality classification. The bathing water quality is influenced by discharges from the wastewater treatment plant and collective and non-collective sanitation sources.

Risks

Potential pollution sources include collective sanitation discharges from the wastewater treatment plant, non-collective sanitation systems, and seasonal camping-car areas. Wastewater treatment plant discharge and lagoon overflow during high water events pose risk to water quality.
