Plage des Kaolins is a large bathing beach approximately 800 metres long located on the western coast of Plœmeur commune in Brittany, France. It is exposed to Atlantic Ocean swells and features sandy beaches reinforced by residual sands from nearby kaolin quarry exploitation. The beach is separated from the coastal road by the extensive Plœmeur golf course. It is the only communal beach situated away from urban areas.

Water

Atlantic Ocean bathing area. The beach is a wave-beaten sandy beach with a marked slope and coarser sand than other cove beaches in the commune. The sandy arc of the foreshore is interrupted at its extremities by two granite promontories. The beach is approximately 800 metres long.

Location

Plœmeur commune, Morbihan department, Brittany region, western coast. The beach is located on the western facade of the commune and is isolated from urban zones. Access to the beach is from the coastal road with the Plœmeur golf course situated inland.

Season

Summer bathing season 2011. Monitoring and bathing profile established from summer 2011 onwards under EC Directive 2006/7.

Water Quality

The bathing site is classified as profile type 1, indicating that the risk of bathing water pollution is not established. Historical bacteriological quality data is available for monitoring purposes.

Risks

Potential risk of phytoplankton development on the bathing zone. Potential risk of macroalgae development on the bathing zone. Summer storm events may cause runoff from the watershed.
